Canon Releases a New Lightweight and Compact Zoom Lens Optimize For Video

Canon, a world leader in digital imaging, is proud to announce the new EF-S55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM, a powerful zoom lens with an emphasis on movie shooting performance using Canon’s new Stepping Motor (STM) technology. Lightweight and compact, the lens offers an excellent balance between image quality, ease of use and affordability.

STM technology
Modern DSLR usage has developed to a point where shooting video has become incredibly prevalent, as users are making full use of the DSLR’s superior image quality and Canon’s powerful DIGIC image processors to create vivid Full HD movies. STM technology uses electrical pulses to drive a motor within the lens, resulting in accurate, smooth and silent auto-focusing. When combined with Canon’s latest  auto-focus technologies such as the Dual Pixel CMOS AF and the Hybrid CMOS AF II, the EF-S55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM’s focusing can reach incredible speeds that vastly outperform USM and micro motor lenses during movie shooting. Thus, users can confidently shoot movies where the desired subjects are always in sharp focus even when quickly panning the DSLR across different subjects at varying distances.

Furthermore, the STM technology ensures extremely quiet operation, allowing users to shoot in quiet environments without the lens’ motor disrupting the silence.

Superior optics
The core function of a lens is to provide high image quality, and to achieve this Canon has incorporated many elements into the EF-S55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM. The optics comprise of a 6-goup optical zoom system with a long reach of up to 250mm and this translates to a 400mm telephoto range when used on a APS-C sensor DSLR such as the EOS 70D.  The zoom distance, coupled with the compact size (70.0 x 111.2mm) and lightness (375g) make the lens highly suitable to be used as a general purpose lens.

For even better image quality, the EF-S55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM includes a UD lens and an Image Stabilizer (IS). The IS allows the lens to capture images with sharpness equivalent to 3.5 shutter stops faster*.

Consumers who prefer to shoot soft-toned images, for instance photos with the depth-of-field “bokeh” blur, Canon has fitted the EF-S55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM with a 7-blade circular aperture. With this, out of focus blurs and light sources in photos will have an attractive circular blur.

Pricing and availability

The new Canon EF-S55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM lens is available now at a recommended retail price of RM1399. For further info, please log on to www.canon.com.my.
